Personal Object Poem
Creative Writing 12/ McCulloch
The purpose of the Personal Object Poem is to relate the significance and the story/stories behind an object that means a great deal to you. You are showing how an object you own has great emotional meaning through the memories that surround it.
1) Free write about any memories attached to your personal object.
2) Skim through these memories and pick sections that seem to resonate strongly with you.
3) Rewrite these sections bringing more precise detail/imagery to the stories that surround what is important about this object.
4) You determine if you want the poem to be one stanza or several. Remember each stanza will have its own unique focus.
5) Stories and memories can be a stanza long or be bits and pieces that add all add up to your object’s significance.
6) AVOID THE FOLLOWING LINE: “ I have an object that is special to me.” Or
“Object is very near to my heart.” Don’t tell us. Show us through the stories you tell. The goal of this poem is to convey why it is important to you without coming right out and saying it.
